Stuart Broad had his heads in his hands in the commentary box as he watched England’s collapse against Australia in the first Ashes Test.

England were left stunned in Perth as Travis Head’s incredible 69-ball century – the second-fastest in Ashes history – completed Australia’s eight-wicket victory to go 1-0 up in the series.

Broad, who retired two years ago, was on commentary duty for Australian broadcaster Seven when England’s middle order fell apart in front of him on the second day.

Joe Root scored just eight runs before he was bowled by Mitchell Starc, leaving England with a lead that was quickly deteriorating.

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden was sat alongside Broad in the commentary box and could sense England’s collapse.

‘Stuart Broad, stay in the commentary box, you are taking wickets galore,’ Hayden said over the cheers from the Australian crowd after Root’s dismissal.

Hayden then added: ‘5/76, can you believe it? Australia, I told you they weren’t going anywhere. This is the stuff, that’s hard, its nails, it’s right now and it’s happening in front of you.’

In his analysis after England’s defeat, Root hailed it as one of Australia’s best wins in their history.

‘Travis Head, really, has played one of the greatest Ashes innings of all time. England had no answers. That is a powerful win,’ Root said.

‘It’s one of those Test matches where you look through the Australian line-up and for years to come they’ll say this is one of the greatest wins they will have had.

‘Lunchtime today, they were almost gone. England were well ahead of this game, and they’ve shown incredible competitive spirit and skill to get themselves just back in the game, but to win by eight wickets.’

Meanwhile, England captain Ben Stokes admitted he and his teammates were left stunned by Australia’s comeback.

‘We’re a little bit shellshocked there,’ Stokes said

‘That innings from Travis Head was pretty phenomenal. It’s quite raw, quite fresh at the moment but that was some knock. It’s knocked the wind out of us.’

England coach, Brendon McCullum, also praised Head for his ‘extraordinary’ performance.

‘I thought 200 was a pretty good score for us to try to defend in the last innings,’ McCullum said.

‘The way that Travis Head played was absolutely outstanding. That’s one of the best knocks in a pressure situation on a tough wicket. He knocked us off our lengths when we wanted to hold our lengths as long as we could, and we thought that was the most dangerous thing on the pitch. We weren’t able to do that due to the pressure they put us under so fair play.

‘It was an extraordinary knock. We’ve always said if someone stands up to us and produces a performance like that you have to tip your cap.

‘We will go away and figure how we can control things better if that happens again. At the same time you have to acknowledge how special that knock was, particularly out of position. It was a brave call to put him up the order. He battered it to all parts.

‘This one will hurt us. Not just us but the people who follow the English cricket team as well. There will be a lot of chatter and for us it’s about making sure we don’t let our confidence and camaraderie tip too low. We know that at our best we are a good cricket team.

‘We have an extended time off and we have 10 to 12 days to bounce back. We’ve done it before. We’ll be believe in what we want to achieve at Brisbane.’
