In back-to-back weeks, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was involved in two controversial incidents that prompted supplemental discipline from the NFL.

Two weeks ago, Herbert suffered an ankle injury after being on the receiving end of a hip-drop tackle from Pittsburgh Steelers pass-rusher Nick Herbig, who was fined $6,656 by the league for his actions.

The following week, Herbert was again at the center of controversy, this time after taking a vicious hit from Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman B.J. Green that knocked him out of the game and brought on backup Trey Lance in relief.

Green bulldozed Chargers right tackle Trey Pipkins on his way to Herbert, wrapping up the QB and driving him into the turf. Game officials felt Green’s actions were a bit excessive, and he was flagged 15 yards for roughing the quarterback.

On Thursday, it was announced by 1010 XL/92.5 FM, the flagship radio station of the Jaguars, that Green had, in fact, been fined by the NFL for his hit on Herbert.

“Jaguars DE Josh Hines-Allen said he offered to cover the fine, saying: ‘I gotta take care of my rooks,’” the station tweeted.

The final monetary amount Green will lose likely won’t be announced until the league releases its list of weekly fines on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, but Green can expect to lose $17,389, which is the standard first offense amount for roughing the passer infractions.

If Green is fined a second time for roughing the passer, the fine escalates to $23,186, according to the NFL rule book.

Herbert and the Chargers are on a bye in Week 12, which couldn’t have come at a better time. The 35-6 loss to the Jaguars was the team’s worst showing of the season.

Aside from having to leave the game, Herbert also had his worst showing of the year as well. He completed just 10 of 18 passes for 81 yards and an interception. He was also sacked twice and posted a passer rating of 44.0 — the second-worst of his six-year NFL career.
