Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito is a free agent, and he is likely to depart given the team's interest in other arms, which should open the path for another American League East team.

Giolito pitched 145 innings last season and posted a 3.41 ERA, his best numbers since 2019. His stellar campaign came at the perfect time as he enters free agency after his best season in a while.

His expected ERA was 4.99 last season, indicating that he did get some luck, but his production still shows an ability to get outs at a consistent rate, something he has failed to do over the years.

He missed the 2024 season with an internal brace repair to his right elbow ulnar collateral ligament, but his fastball remained at the same velocity that it was at in 2023.

Lucas Giolito...

There are still risks with Giolito, especially since he missed the 2025 postseason with an elbow injury and he can be inconsistent year-in and year-out. However, pitcher-needy teams can find value in an established arm.

According to Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, the Baltimore Orioles could use a veteran pitch like Giolito to help bolster a unit that struggled last season.

"The Orioles have 329.2 innings to replace between Tomoyuki Sugano, Charlie Morton and Zach Eflin, and they also flipped Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels for slugger Taylor Ward earlier this week," Reuter wrote in his story.

"Full seasons from Trevor Rogers and Kyle Bradish will go a long way after they made a combined 24 starts, so one quality veteran arm to slot somewhere in the No. 2/3 range in their rotation might be all they need. Lucas Giolito reestablished himself as that caliber of starter after a strong campaign in Boston."

The Orioles are tasked with rebuilding their entire rotation and Giolito could help give reliable innings, providing a solid starting spot.
