The Toronto Blue Jays fell short of the World Series and could lose key players on the open market. Among their list of free agents is legendary pitcher Max Scherzer.
Scherzer did not have the best regular season, pitching to a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts. However, he ended up being a solid player in the postseason. He made three starts, posting a 3.77 ERA, and took the ball in Game 7 of the World Series. In that game, he gave the Blue Jays 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one run.
Scherzer is going to be a Hall of Famer when he retires, but he wants to keep playing for now. The 41-year-old is no longer the ace he once was, but should still be able to find a role in a rotation this offseason. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicted he would sign with the Detroit Tigers this winter.
..."After getting mixed results from Jack Flaherty in the first season of a two-year, $35 million deal, the Tigers could opt to shop in the one-year-deal bin this offseason," wrote Reuter. "A reunion with Max Scherzer could be the perfect way to bridge the gap to some of their young arms."
Scherzer's age and decline will likely cap his market to one-year offers. However, he could be a solid arm to have in the back of a rotation. He turned back the clock in October, and perhaps is valuable to a contender for solely postseason experience. The Tigers are contenders in the American League and could pose a threat to the Blue Jays next season.
Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, eight-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion. He has pitched in 33 postseason games and could be a great addition for the Tigers.
