By Lydia PatrickShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberA blind rescue dog has melted hearts online after he instantly recognized his foster mom picking him up—despite still not having found a permanent home.
A viral video shows the tan-colored chihuahua wagging his tail uncontrollably as he sniffs her hand, immediately knowing it is her. The touching moment, shared by @littlemamabigworld on Instagram, has received over 214,000 likes and 2.8 million views.
‘Classic Tan Chihuahua Syndrome’
"He suffered from classic tan chihuahua syndrome which is the phenomenon that medium sized tan chihuahuas are not considered as cute as say small chihuahuas with behavior problems or black chihuahuas that look like baby bats," the dog advocate told Newsweek.
...She explained that Montero required an extensive dental cleaning, which she assumed contributed to his surrender. He arrived in her care alongside another foster dog, Donuts, who had been hit by a car, healed poorly, potentially had cancer and suffered from separation anxiety.
While Donuts was adopted within four days after receiving numerous applications, Montero waited five weeks before any interest. Despite being well-behaved and blind, he was repeatedly passed over at adoption events. Big Mama said she uses her platform to spotlight senior dogs and those with unique needs, advocating for why they deserve love.
Benefits of Adopting a Blind Dog
Experts say that adopting a blind dog is not as daunting as many assume. According to guidance from PetMD, caring for a blind dog isn’t all that different than caring for a sighted dog.
With just a few special considerations, you can make sure that your visually limited dog lives their best life.
The resource notes that:
- Blind dogs often face no greater long-term veterinary costs unless their blindness stems from treatable conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts.
- They adapt quickly to new spaces, often memorizing the layout of a home within days.
- Keeping furniture in consistent places helps build their confidence and safety.
- Training, enrichment, and socializing with children or other pets remain fully achievable.
Experts emphasize that blind dogs are just as capable of forming deep, loving bonds as their sighted counterparts.
Support From Social Media
Instagram users flooded the comments of Montero’s video with encouragement and affection.
“Montero’s forever family is out there! The perfect person will embrace everything about him,” wrote one user.
Another commenter, Deidre, added: “Fostering an animal has got to be one of the hardest jobs! But if it were not for selfless, loving, patient angels like you, we never would have found our Frankie. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your loving caring heart.”
Others expressed their continued support for his journey. “In the mean time I will continue to look forward to Montero content lol,” one user said.
“Sending positive energy that Mr Montero finds his furever home,” another wrote.
Becky shared her own experience, saying: “I had two elderly pups who eventually went blind. I continued to wear the same body spray for years until they passed. I wanted them to always recognize my scent. And they sure did! Blind & elderly pups are so very special.”
