Looks like Greggs might have some competition (Picture: Bakery79)
Greggs is the go-to for many Brits looking to snack on a sausage roll or doughnut, but it seems there’s a new bakery business vying to be our fave.
Bakery79 is a little-known chain specialising in food-to-go, that’s been quietly growing in popularity over the last few months.
It only launched in the UK this year, but already it’s expanding at a rapid rate, with 12 new sites, all of which are located in former Greggs concessions at Park Garage Group forecourts.
The majority of Bakery79’s stores can be found in the South of England. But there are also a few dotted around up North, including in Newcastle and Durham.

What does Bakery79 serve?
The menu has breakfast options, lunch and various sweet treats and snacks on offer.
In the morning you can order classics like bacon baps and sausage baps, as well as breakfast pots, potato poppers and baguettes.
One staff member was even bold enough to tell Kent Online they thought that their breakfast bowl was ‘better than Greggs’.
There’s also a range of coffees, plus pizzas, halloumi bites, chicken bites, cookies, doughnuts and sandwiches, and of course sausage rolls.

A Bakery79 staff member known only as Jackie also spoke to Kent Online, stating that she thinks the chain will stand out because of the quality of its pastries:
‘In other stores you usually get a lot of pastry and not much inside, but these are full, especially the ones with beans. The sausage rolls are really nice too,’ she said.
What do customers think of the chain?
In all of their of their shops, the bakery aims to promotes a sense of community – wanting each of their stores to feel like a warm and welcoming place for customers.
And, as it turns out, a lot of people feel like they’ve nailed it on the head.
Regular customer Emily K shared a review on the company website, saying: ‘The community vibe at Bakery 79 makes it special, and the baked goods are to die for!’
‘Always fresh, always tasty – Bakery 79 is my go-to for a quick bite and great coffee!’ added Mike C in a different post.

But does the quality of the food match the atmosphere?
TikTok user, @Liam_Lav, had never heard of the bakery before it took over one of the previous Greggs concessions in Ashington, Northumberland. But after his first visit, it’s fair to say he became a fan,
‘The stuff in here looks absolutely lush,’ Liam told his followers as he filmed the hot food displays.
The food creator noted that the pizza was ‘unreal’ and was overall very pleased with the selection of goodies he went home with.

Clearly a top seller, the bakery has expanded the flavour selection, recently introducing a Meat Feast pizza option.
Now, Greggs is known for their own quality pizza slices, so this could be a point of contention. However, the legacy store might just win over customers due to price point.
The Gregg’s pepperoni pizza slice is currently £2.75, while a slice at Bakery79 will set you back £2.79. Amid a cost of living crisis – every little helps.
