The New York Yankees swung a huge trade last offseason to acquire Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers, but the deal didn't work out well for the Bronx Bombers. Rather than Williams continuing his dominance in New York, he had a bad year, and now he's headed for free agency.

Williams is free to sign with any team this offseason. It seems like the Yankees are going to be willing to let him walk in free agency, but where could he sign?

Bailey Bassett of Clutchpoints recently predicted Williams would sign a one-year, $17 million deal with the rival New York Mets this offseason.

New York Yankees pitcher Devin Williams...

"In this projection, Devin Williams and Edwin Diaz swap places as closers playing for New York teams. Williams had an up-and-down season for the Yankees, but he was viewed as arguably the best reliever in baseball just a year ago," Bassett wrote. "He may have to sign a prove-it deal, but such a move could really pay off for the New York Mets. Williams has connections to members of the Mets' organization from his time with the Milwaukee Brewers, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the team pursued the reliever and got the best out of him."

The Mets could lose their own closer, Edwin Diaz, to free agency this winter, too. As a result, they need to target bullpen help very aggressively.

Coming off a poor season, Williams would work better as a setup man, but if the Mets are desperate enough, they could slot him in as the closer.

Either way, adding Williams on a one-year deal would fit perfectly with the Mets and their payroll.
